The Gift Between Seasons; Between Promise and Winter

What do we do with expectations?

It is the middle of September,

cool afternoons turn to

blustery evenings and

colorful leaves whip around in a frenzy,

the last dance before winter

buries their energetic devotion.

Yet,

today is like a summer day;

soft skies, a warm breeze, a powerful sun

that warms through

the layers of uncertainty of what is to come.

My petunias still bloom,

faces confidently turned to the light,

reassured of promise,

worshipping these extra moments of growth

before winter truly ends their short

reign of beauty.

So,

what do we do when we deny

what is coming, when we live

in the midst of a false security?

We choose to open the door bravely,

sigh with awe for the extra gift, the

unexpected and undeserved gift

received, wrapped like summer...

gently bridging the journey to winter.
